Walter P. Chrysler left Buick to save the Maxwell Motor Company in 1920, and five years later, his name was on the building. By the 1950s, the company created an empire of far-flung brands in Europe, and in the 1970s it formed a fruitful captive import relationship with Mitsubishi. After a government bailout saved the company in the late 1970s, it introduced the first American minivan, the Caravan, which changed the suburban landscape almost immediately. A merger with Daimler didn’t last, but Chrysler now is one of the components of FCA – Fiat Chrysler Automotive, an Italian-American company with a broad portfolio. However, Chrysler itself only sells two nameplates: the aging 300 and the critically acclaimed Pacifica minivan.
